Architecture during Art

Architecture during Art" Symposium 2018_An event by Laufen Bathrooms during Art Basel

Swiss bathroom specialist Laufen Bathrooms was putting on another inspiring programme at the Laufen Forum, coinciding with Art Basel, the international art fair for modern and contemporary art. Personalities from architecture and culture examined challenges in the fields of architecture, society and culture from different perspectives. The event and symposium were created in cooperation with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.

"Hidden truths of Architecture” is part of the evening event of the "Architecture during Art" symposium whereby Laufen offers a platform to discuss the hidden sides of architecture. The panellists shed light on how subconsciously perceived characteristics of architecture can increase well-being.

Many design qualities of a building are visible at first glance, making architecture comprehensible. But the special charm of many buildings lies in hidden architectural qualities that cannot be directly grasped. Architects often communicate important subtleties which need to be called into consciousness, as they are not knowingly understood immediately.

Difficult to represent in architecture magazines, architectural qualities are critical for the way in which a building surrounds and affects us in everyday life. Whether atmospheric, tectonic or tactile qualities: they are too unremarkable or too complex to be illustrated. However, these qualities usually remain hidden even from those to whom they communicate on a daily basis. Because they are not consciously perceived and it takes special
situations or special mindfulness to notice them. These hidden sides of architecture and their performative potential to increase our well-being are the subject of our conversation. How – in which media? – can they be documented and communicated? And how can architects anticipate these qualities?
