As the design challenge continues, SaphirKeramik, the thinnest ceramic material in the world, is still transforming the way interior design is applied in the world of bathroom culture.
This year, Laufen has entrusted Marcel Wanders with the task of interpreting this revolutionary material in his own unique style: it’s an exploration of the incredible potential which has given rise to a new product line with a soft and refined design. An extensive and articulated project that, for the first time, explores classic and decorative forms: The New Classic is born.
At this year’s Salone Internazionale del Bagno, the Laufen stand concept was also new and innovative. Designed by world-famous architects Gabrielle Hächler and Andreas Fuhrimann, it staged the two, sometimes conflicting souls of the company: traditional craftsmanship and avant-garde technology.
Laufen affirmed its strength of co-operation and the ability for innovation. In the exclusive setting of the Salone Internazionale del Bagno, the Swiss company specialising in the realisation of complete solutions for the bathroom environment, presented "New Classic", a new project in collaboration with the eclectic Dutch designer Marcel Wanders.
The project is part of a wider and more strategic project which the company is developing for SaphirKeramik. For years Laufen has been working with renowned designers to challenge and explore this material. Projects were born that emphasised its lightness and subtlety, others were focused on the possibility of creating three-dimensional surfaces and some have changed the way of thinking about bathroom environments. Collections which have shown how this versatile material can speak a very minimal language as well as being extremely decorative.
It is now with Marcel Wanders that SaphirKeramik looks at the most classic styles for the first time. A versatile concept, in which bohemian philosophies reflect a cosmopolitan and metropolitan attitude.
SaphirKeramik certainly remained the protagonist of this year’s Salone del Mobile. Additionally the exhibition space included the iconic Sonar (which is enhanced with furnishing), Val, Ino and Kartell by Laufen collections, the result of design exchanges with internationally renowned designers such as Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic, Toan Nguyen and Ludovica and Roberto Palomba.
Laufen, a trendsetter in bathroom solutions, has always been perceptive to trends and changes in taste and has now chosen to focus on the particular matt white finish for its ceramics. Many of the products on display were in fact presented in this particular finish that is destined to become the new "must have" for bathrooms in the coming years.
Finally, inside the stand, an area dedicated to bespoke projects told the story of the brand's most recent developments. Through fruitful collaborations with architects and designers, Laufen's innovative and experimental talent finds its place in the bespoke design sector with projects ranging from New York to Doha.
A unique ceramic material with revolutionary high-tech attributes, Saphirkeramik is the result of years of research by Laufen to create a new generation of products. Much thinner and lighter than the traditional ceramic, it boasts extraordinary hardness and strength as well as considerable resistance to bending. Since its development in 2013, the company has involved leading names such as Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, Konstantin Grcic, Toan Nguyen and Patricia Urquiola to explore the potential of the material in lighter and smoother design collections. This year Marcel Wanders' eclectic design reinterprets the Saphirkeramik in a collection with soft and elegant lines.

Contemporary classics is the idea for a new collection by Laufen designed by Marcel Wanders which was presented for the first time to the international public at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
A versatile and articulated project with a classic edge, in which bohemian is perfectly combined with cosmopolitan and metropolitan, creating an eclectic style. A reinterpretation of classic elegance in a contemporary key that gives life to a sophisticated and contemporary collection which includes washbasins and a bathtub, as well as furniture and accessories for the bathroom.
SONAR by Patricia Urquiola
Sonar is the third generation of products in SaphirKeramik. A refined and elegant line of washbasins - also available in the countertop version - and bathtubs designed by Patricia Urquiola. The designer initiates a continuous dialogue between elementary forms that penetrate and harmonise in a sophisticated balance of angles and curves. This year the collection was enriched with matt white ceramic and container furniture with rounded lines and metallic finishes.
VAL by Konstantin Grcic
Konstantin Grcic's creative flair, together with his great ability to push new materials and new production methods to their limits, led to the birth of the diverse collection in Saphirkeramik VAL.

INO by Toan Nguyen
The creative synergy between Laufen and Toan Nguyen, which began in 2011, led to the creation of the INO series, through which the Parisian designer was able to explore the almost infinite possibilities of working with Saphirkeramik, developing its subtlety and lightness to obtain an aesthetic with simple and elegant features.
The conventional shape of the washbasin has been reinterpreted with the aim of creating a practical and functional product, suitable for everyday use and at the same time with aesthetically attractive lines. This year Laufen presented INO ceramics in matt white, which accentuates the architectural lines even more.
KARTELL BY LAUFEN by Roberto and Ludovica Palomba
As a result of a partnership between Kartell's iconic design and Laufen's drive to innovate, the Kartell by Laufen collection includes a complete range of furnishings, accessories, sanitary - available in different finishings, including the new matt white - and faucets designed by award-winning designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba.
Quality, innovation, research, emotion, glamour, energy and colour: these are just some of the ingredients and values of a winning project, which from its very beginning, has enjoyed great success in the market and with its critics.
A special focus was dedicated to custom solutions, presented in an installation dedicated to the brand's most recent achievements around the world; from New York to Doha, the Laufen bespoke proposals are on show, from small to large scale.
Laufen not only has a wealth of experience in manufacturing products for the retail sector, but also as a key partner for architects and design studios for the development of bespoke projects. Sector professionals turn to the company's expertise to meet the needs of customisation and exclusivity inherent in the design for turnkey solutions. Not only the large-scale supply of "catalogue" products, but also the management of highly personalised and site-specific orders that enhance the unique characteristics of each interior. Laufen put their faith in the hands of renowned architects to design their exhibition space at the Salone del Mobile fair. Gabriele Hächler and Andreas Fuhrimann were working on an exhibition stand for the first time in their career. They are used to long-lasting buildings and architecture projects, but took up the challenge of setting up a more transient and temporary space such as the Laufen exhibition stand.
Inspired by Laufen’s image movie, the two architects conceived a project that revolves around the company's expert know-how, telling the story of its rich artisan tradition and its constant commitment to reinvent itself and project itself towards the future.

Kartell by Laufen. The game of experimentation between research and wellness in an artistic and museum like scenario.
Kartell by Laufen was at the Milan Design Week with an artistic museum setting in the heart of the Brera Design District, at the flagship store in Via Pontaccio.
Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, the two creative heads of the Kartell by Laufen project, born from the now consolidated partnership between Kartell's iconic design and Laufen's innovative quality, continue their experimentation and innovation in the bathroom sector, presenting for the first time an engaging and exploratory conceptual exercise on sinks, combining design and research.
A new interpretation of the needs of modern daily life where the relationship with the home and in particular the bathroom focuses on aspects related not only to the functional dimension but also and above all to an emotional dimension, a rediscovery of themselves, their well-being and body care.
