Olympic Stadium, Berlin, Germany

Newly refurbished, the Olympic Stadium in Berlin offers space for 74,000 spectators.

The latest modernization concept emphasizes the quality of the existing structure, built in 1936, and is subordinate to it because of its classification as a historical monument. Thus all necessary new structures are located underground and outside the stadium to prevent obvious visual intervention to the stadium’s graceful appearance.

Fulfilling the functional requirements, the design of the stand roof considers both artistic significance and preservation conditions. The new roof structure is not a closed ring but remains open in the middle and in front of the historical Marathon Gate Arch. The delicate structure and the selected surface materials contrast the new grandstand roof against the solid tectonics of the historical stadium.

With the renovation architects von Gerkan, Marg & Partner designed a unique modern multi-functional arena for soccer, athletics and large outdoor music events.
