LAUFEN - the space collection

This year’s exhibition in LAUFEN space Milan gives voice to our eclectic soul.

LAUFEN presents an unusual collection with extraordinary partners as part of the Milan Design Week 2023: From the collaboration with the NM3 design studio, to the bold aesthetics of the Swiss artist Monique Baumann, up to the decorative touch of Marcel Wanders, the space collection brings together very different artistic languages that make it possible to outline new disruptive scenarios not only for the bathroom.

LAUFENXNM3

LAUFEN presents the collaboration with NM3, the Milan design studio led by Francesco Zorzi, Nicolò Ornaghi and Delfino Sisto Legnani. Their collection is characterized by the use of shiny stainless steel, worked through standard metal carpentry processes and offers furniture solutions, small furnishings and a series of accessories with rigorous lines and high quality.

In combination with the LAUFEN ceramic elements, these pure and mirroring objects offer an unprecedented scenario for the bathroom environment, where both materials obtain a sculptural and almost abstract presence, which in turn harmonizes with various architectural situations.

Monique Baumann_Creative Edition

In diametric contrast is the work of Monique Baumann, shown on the same floor of the exhibition. The Swiss artist loves to experiment with colours, different materials and images to create mixed media collages and to give life to abstract worlds that are the result of a completely analog, free and intuitive approach.

For the space collection, LAUFEN asked Monique Baumann to re-interpret some pieces of the iconic Kartell • LAUFEN collection: the freestanding washbasin, the round countertop washbasin in Saphirkeramik, and the wall-hung WC. Using three different techniques - charcoal, collage and painting - and maximum compositional freedom, as well as LAUFEN's great mastery of ceramics, Monique Baumann has created three original works of art with a strong presence that will bring new energy to the bathroom.

A different approach has also produced three other small artworks that are part of the edition: Baumann applied her collage technique as well to the storage discs of the new ADA faucet collection, offering two different sizes to adapt to the washbasin mixer and to the column single lever bath mixer, and with designs inspired by natural elements like water, stone and wood.

Marcel Wanders - The New Classic

The washbasins of The New Classic collection, characterized by its soft and sinuous lines and made in Saphirkeramik, are embellished thanks to three new patterns created by Marcel Wanders. The new Reliefs, Bohemian, Ornamental and Cosmopolitan are a further step forward in the individualization of the ultra-thin and resistant ceramic material developed by LAUFEN.

More space collection …

Also part of the space collection but not featured in the exhibition are the bespoke washbasin and bathtub with their ultra-modern lines, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and produced exclusively for New York's 56 Leonard residential tower.

… with colours:

LAUFEN’s space collection also offers designers an additional tool for customisation of the bathroom: A new set of colours including more delicate shades such as light pink, grey beige and light mint green up to more energetic colours such as evergreen and light blue will be available in both glossy and matte versions. A very elegant café shade with a matt finish only and a glossy cardinal red with a strong character are also part of the collection.

Beyond space collection

Two other objects are as well part of the Milan exhibition “How dare you”: For the first time LAUFEN presents the Falconnier Chandelier, a unique piece also created by Marcel Wanders and a tribute to the 19th century architect Gustave Falconnier, inventor of the "briques de verre".

And right at the entrance of the LAUFEN space Milan, Helix, a large ceramic object catches the eye of the visitor, consisting of spiral elements made of Saphirkeramik strung on motorized steel poles, forming an elegant partition that can be opened or closed, creating different environments. The installation was developed in collaboration with the Austrian studio EOOS NEXT.

LAUFEN’s space collection will be available on request through the LAUFEN spaces in Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, Prague, Miami, Laufen and Milan as well as at selected retailers.
