Architectural projects

BATTERSEA POWER STATION, London, UK

The 42-acre masterplan for Battersea Power Station has generated investment totaling around £8 billion, making it one of the most significant urban developments in the world. Completion of phase 1 is scheduled for later this year, with the final phase due in 2025. As part of phase 1, the first 866 homes out of a total of 3900 are being built. German firm Deba has delivered 1241 bespoke Laufen bathroom pods on time for integration into these residences in the dRMM and SimpsonHaugh-designed Circus West buildings.

Especially for this project, Laufen produced 1241 Kartell • LAUFEN wall-hung WCs, 1241 bespoke “Sentec” washbasins and 750 “Marbond” shower trays in a total of 200 different bespoke variations.

Laufen’s involvement in the development of innovative prefabricated bathroom solutions is helping to demonstrate how mass customization could revolutionize the construction industry. These bathroom pods are delivered with all electrics and plumbing ready to plug into the core services, reducing the installation time and the number of trades required on site. Laufen’s custom-made products are currently being incorporated into premium prefabricated bathrooms for some of the world’s most significant real estate developments, including the Battersea Power Station project in London.

The benefits of prefabricated construction methods extend to their efficient use of resources and the assurance of consistent quality in every detail.

These solutions are becoming particularly popular for large-scale residential projects, as well as public or semi-public buildings such as hotels, hospitals or student residences. When German pod manufacturer DEBA was invited in 2011 to produce the bathrooms for the first phase of residences at Battersea Power Station, it chose Laufen as its preferred partner. In response to the project’s complex requirements, Laufen used its customization expertise to develop a bespoke solution that could be mass produced to the exacting standards expected of this prestigious development.

DEBA has delivered and installed 1241 bespoke Laufen bathroom pods on time to residences contained in the dRMM and SimpsonHaugh-designed Circus West buildings. The varying dimensions of the pods meant that the products had to be adapted to suit a range of layouts. In total, Laufen produced 96 different product variations, including custom-sized washbasins, countertops and shower trays. The washbasins were produced in Laufen’s innovative Sentec cast mineral material, while the shower trays make use of the Marbond composite. The Kartell • LAUFEN wall-hung WC also featured in the pods, which make optimal use of the available space whilst providing the highest level of design and quality fabrication with water-saving function. Upon its completion in 2025, the Battersea Power Station site will include around 3900 private residential units alongside offices, hotels, conference centres, theatres, galleries and leisure facilities, making it one of the largest and most important regeneration projects in Europe. Laufen’s contribution to this crucial first phase affirms its position as a leading supplier of bespoke bathroom solutions, and demonstrates its ability to collaborate on global projects involving complex processes, logistics and international coordination.
