A distinguished name in industrial design, Gerhard Busalt is the founder of busalt design, a multi-award-winning studio based in Traunreut, Germany. His work is guided by a deep affinity for material and a conviction that true elegance lies in reduction to the essential.
For three decades, Busalt has explored the expressive possibilities of glazed steel, most notably in his long-standing collaboration with Alape, where his sculptural washbasins and shell forms have refined the material’s quiet beauty. In 2023 Alape was acquired by Roca Group, of which LAUFEN is part, and was renamed VITREON steel.
Beyond the bathroom, Busalt has collaborated for international brands such as Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Gaggenau and Thermador. His work has been honoured with the Red Dot Award, iF Product Design Award and Good Design Award.
The VITREON Steel collection offers unique tactility, refined aesthetics and durable hygiene courtesy of glazed steel. Busalt contributed a number of revered pieces to the collection, developing a reduced form inspired by the washing dishes and pitchers from the Biedermeier era that serve as a uniting narrative arc.
