People are central to Peter Wirz’s design thinking. Their needs, emotions and relationship with water shape his approach, which he describes as democratic design. Through his long standing collaboration with LAUFEN, Wirz has created functional and refined solutions for a more environmentally conscious world.
Peter Wirz was born in 1960 in Brienz, Switzerland. Before turning to industrial design, Wirz was a successful middle-distance runner, competing twice in the Olympic Games in the 1980s and becoming European Champion in his discipline in 1984. Curiously, Wirz’s future nexus with LAUFEN seems to have been preordained, as laufen is the German word for to run or to race.
The one-pointed focus on a specific goal and the equally positive attitude to success and defeat Wirz developed as an athlete have stood him in good stead for his subsequent design career. After studying mechanical engineering and industrial design, the creative founded Vetica Group in 1997.
With offices in Germany, China and Taiwan, this international design and branding agency leverages an interdisciplinary team to co-create brand and product processes, shaping both form and function. The company’s field of work ranges from medical technology, consumer products, sport and lifestyle to strategic design consultancy, computer user interfaces and interior design. Clients include 3M, ABB, BENQ, DUSCHOLUX, LUFTHANSA, ROCHE, STARBUCKS, VICTORINOX and LAUFEN.
As the founder and creative lead of Vetica Group, Wirz has led the agency to win no fewer than 85 international design awards, including the iF Design Award, the German Design Award, the Red Dot Design Award and the Golden Pin Design Award.
