Located in Banyoles, Girona, Spain, this residential project by Estudi Maite Prats explores how an existing home can be reinterpreted for contemporary living while respecting its architectural identity. The intervention restores and enhances the original residence, preserving its defining proportions, openings and spatial qualities while introducing a carefully considered extension.
Rather than imitating the existing architecture, the new volume establishes its own identity while maintaining a close relationship with the original house. The historic building accommodates the shared living spaces, including the kitchen, dining and living areas, while the extension contains the private rooms and service functions. Positioned as a separate yet connected element, it creates a transition that strengthens the experience of moving between old and new.
A restrained palette of concrete, timber and steel defines the contemporary addition. Together with carefully framed views, natural light and precise detailing, these materials create interiors that feel calm, balanced and closely connected to their architectural setting.
