From girls’ school to boutique hotel: The Rebyl

In the heart of Nijmegen (The Netherlands), The Rebyl stands as a bold reinterpretation of history and modern hospitality. Designed by Apto Architects in collaboration with Odyssey Hotel Group and Lingotto, this 7,500 m² project breathes new life into a former 1922 girls’ school, transforming it into a vibrant four-star hotel where heritage and rebellion coexists.

A tribute to the women of the past

The Rebyl celebrates transformation, not only of architecture, but of spirit. Once a place of education for young women, it now welcomes guests from around the world with the same sense of independence and resilience that inspired its name. Here, history lives on in a modern form, a tribute to the rebellious women of the past, reimagined for today.

Reimagining heritage through design

Tasked with construction supervision, interior design, and branding, Apto Architects guided every stage of the transformation. The vision was clear: to respect the building’s original character while crafting a modern, rebellious hospitality concept.

Art Deco and Amsterdam School details including arched doorways, high ceilings, and floral tiles were carefully preserved and integrated into a contemporary design language that celebrates the building’s storied past.

Spaces that welcome and inspire

Guest rooms were redesigned to maximise light and openness, featuring exposed wooden beams, loft-style layouts, and a soft pastel palette that pays homage to the building’s heritage. The vibrant lobby, defined by iridescent pendant lighting and warm wood tones, sets the tone for an inclusive and uplifting guest experience.

Located on the iconic Vierdaagseplein, The Rebyl serves as a central meeting point in the city of Nijmegen. Shared spaces, including the Madame Liberty Restaurant, gym, and event areas, connect visitors and locals alike, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Bathroom design: elegance in function

o complement this harmonious blend of past and present, LAUFEN bathroom solutions were chosen for their timeless quality and Swissness precision. The hotel’s bathrooms feature PRO toilets, LUA bathtubs, and LUA faucets, combining comfort, durability, and contemporary elegance perfectly in tune with the hotel’s modern character.
