To celebrate this anniversary, LAUFEN has invited the internationally renowned Viennese design studio mischer'traxler to create an immersive Customer Experience journey at our Gmunden facility, skillfully combining analogue and technological presentation techniques. This journey of discovery for local and international visitors, as well as industry professionals, leads through the history, current production, and sustainable innovations of LAUFEN.
The space has been meticulously transformed, converting existing scenes in the plant into interactive displays and stations for the tour. This creates a varied overall narrative that deliberately avoids over-technological entertainment. The aim was to set new standards in sustainable corporate presentation and convey LAUFEN's values and philosophy. Participants can engage all their senses to experience the journey through the factory and even create their own ceramic bowl. Information on history, sustainable production, and innovation is presented in a playful and entertaining manner, always directly connected with the objects, tools, machines, and products in the factory spaces and workshops.
Just as in production, where great attention is given to the reuse of materials, this theme is also central to the design of the visitor tour. The designers have repurposed on-site materials, such as old casting molds, into seating, displays, and tables, while using LAUFEN products to create entertaining and visually appealing elements. Throughout the tour, visitors are accompanied by delightful LAUFEN characters—crafted from casting molds, washbasins, and brush holders—providing engaging company both around and inside the factory.
Gmunden, with its long tradition in ceramic production, also serves as an innovation centre for LAUFEN. The tour showcases significant milestones achieved here, such as Saphirkeramik, which incorporates the mineral corundum to achieve flexural strength comparable to steel, opening up new design possibilities for the bathroom. Other highlights include the first-ever freestanding washbasin ingeniously cast as a single piece, the antibacterial and antiviral surface finish LAUFEN Clean Coat Active (LCCA), and the first urine-separating toilet, Save!, developed in cooperation with the Viennese design studio EOOS.

Sustainability is a central concern for LAUFEN. The Circular Economy Staircase, a key element of the visit, illustrates the company's environmental and sustainability initiatives. These include the use of natural resources such as clay and rainwater, and utilising energy from 100% renewable sources. Throughout the tour, thoughtfully designed installations, including murals by Viennese illustrators Maresch & Sturm, demonstrate how LAUFEN reprocesses production waste, extends the life of its products, and contributes to water conservation.
The new electric tunnel kiln in Gmunden is an invention of particular significance and a milestone for climate-neutral production: It is the world’s first and only electric tunnel kiln in the sanitaryware industry to be powered by renewable electricity instead of gas. As a company that manufactures products for the careful use of the precious resource of water, LAUFEN is committed to protecting the natural foundations of life.
After four years of development, the kiln commenced its role of firing the ceramics at the site in January 2024, exclusively utilising energy derived from 100% renewable sources, and is testament to LAUFEN’s strategic approach to decarbonisation, energy efficiency and water conservation
