Marcel Wanders is an anomaly in the world of design. Committed to injecting the human into his work, the designer creates pieces bursting with poetry, romance and fantasy. Always experimental and at times eccentric, Wanders’ creations excite, provoke and polarise, inevitably eliciting a response from the user.
Marcel Wanders is a leading product and interior designer born in the Netherlands in 1963. Graduating cum laude from the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhelm, he later went on to found his namesake design studio in addition to Moooi, a company offering designer lighting, furniture and accessories.
Marcel Wanders is the spearhead of a ‘new age of design’, which rejects the coldness of industrialism and technocracy and instead embraces romance, surrealism and poetry. Inviting you to expect the unexpected, the creative has designed over 2,500 pieces for renowned brands such as Alessi, Baccarat, Bisazza, Christofle, Kosé Corporation/ Decorté, Flos, FendiCasa, KLM, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, LH&E Group, Louis Vuitton, Miramar Group, Morgans Hotel Group, Puma and, naturally, LAUFEN.
The ingenuity of Wanders’ work has led to key pieces being included in major art and design museums, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Pinakotheke der Moderne in Munich and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
Wanders has received scores of awards over the course of his 30-year design career, such as the European Product Design Award, the German Design Award, the Red Dot Design Award and the iF Design Award to name but a few.
Marcel Wanders designed THE NEW CLASSIC for LAUFEN in 2019. The complete bathroom collection offers an elegant and poetic reimagining of classic ceramics, furniture, faucets and accessories for the bathroom. The collection’s sinuous contours create elegant shapes that promise an exquisitely human experience of bathing.
Neoclassic in the purest sense, THE NEW CLASSIC reinterprets the elegance of yesteryear for the present day. Drawing inspiration from classic forms, Roman porticos and tulips, the pieces gracefully unite to create a balanced whole that exudes timeless sophistication.
Poetic, opulent and exciting, THE NEW CLASSIC is reminiscent of great love stories. Each creation is a minor artistic masterpiece whose forms capture the romanticism of times past, speaking directly to the human heart.
Intricate decorative patterns adorn the washbasins in the collection, adding subtle and tactile intrigue. Inspired by geometric and natural forms, the motifs are sculpted from Saphirkeramik, a fine and durable ceramic material invented by LAUFEN.
Graceful and delicate, the sculpted walnut frame makes a handsome companion to the fine lines of the ceramic washbasin.
A boutique hotel housed in a 19th-century mansion, Kimpton BEM Budapest flaunts a whimsical interior, characteristic of Marcel Wanders design. The public and private bathrooms in the hotel are equipped with THE NEW CLASSIC.
A poetic and immersive installation designed by Marcel Wanders was displayed at Casa Decor 2025, one of Spain’s leading interior design events. Based on THE NEW CLASSIC collection, the exhibition captures the designer’s signature experimental style.
In homage to the inventor of “briques de verre” Gustave Falconnier, the chandelier is made of original glass bricks and bricks produced in Saphirkeramik. This unique piece of art expresses the history of design as an everlasting and renewable concept.
